About Us - The People and Ferrets

The Ferret Trading Post is brought to you by Eric and Mary Shefferman (creators of Modern Ferret Magazine) and their ferrets. Here are Eric and Mary with Balthazar (R.I.P.) & Bosco da Gama (R.I.P.) The Story of Modern Ferret

In 1992, Mary and Eric Shefferman brought home their first ferret, Sabrina. Sabrina was shortly followed by Ralph, then Marshmallow -- "Ferret Math" had struck.
In 1994, the lack of educational materials for ferret owners compelled them to create their own resource -- Modern Ferret Magazine. The goal was to help educate ferret owners and to encourage manufacturers to produce products for ferrets. Now Mary and Eric self-publish the highly acclaimed, award-winning Modern Ferret Magazine from their home with the help of their ferret Gabrielle (Sabrina, Ralph, Marshmallow, Knuks, Trixie, Bosco da Gama, Balthazar, Cauliflower, and Koosh are gone now).

And Now: The Ferret Trading Post

Back in 1992, it was very difficult to find any ferret products anywhere. The world has changed quite a bit since then. Now there are a lot more ferret products available -- but it is harder for a ferret owner to determine which are really good products.

We've always been strongly committed to ferret owner education, and we knew that the kind of web site you are looking at -- one that educates and explains -- would be a valuable means of getting good products into the hands of good ferret owners.

Mary and Eric

Mary R. Shefferman is the author of The Ferret: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet and The Wit and Wisdom of the Modern Ferrets: A Ferret's Perspective on Ferret Care, 500 Things My Ferret Told Me, as well as the Editor of Modern Ferret Magazine. Before turning her talents towards ferrets, Mary was a managing editor for a medical education project house. She has (let's just say "many") years professional experience in various aspects of writing, editing, and publishing. She holds a BA in English/Writing from Southampton College.

Eric Shefferman has worked in the publishing and computer programming fields. His keen ability for self-teaching has allowed him to learn juggling (he's even been known to juggle fire every few years), the guitar, photography, web programming, desktop publishing (layout and design), pretty much any computer program around, and anything else he puts his mind to.
